Foundation to Year 2
Prep to Year 2 teaching resources
Five lessons built around three areas — healthy teeth, protecting teeth and caring for teeth — and around the Whole Bite Club visit. The lessons are designed to be taught in sequence. In the schools the club visits, about 40 to 45 per cent of children have already had tooth decay, and in some it is closer to half.
Key messages
The content of The Whole Bite Club is based on current evidence and best-practice preventive oral health:
Healthy teeth
Teeth are living parts of our body that do important jobs, and we grow two sets in our lifetime: baby teeth and adult teeth.
Protecting teeth
What we eat and drink affects our teeth. Tooth decay happens when germs in our mouth use sugar to make acid — a kind of infection — so choosing water and everyday foods, and keeping germs down, helps protect our teeth.
Caring for teeth
We keep our teeth healthy with good daily hygiene: brushing twice a day with an age-appropriate fluoride toothpaste, cleaning between our teeth, washing our face and hands, not sharing things that go in our mouths, and visiting an oral health professional.
The visit, part by part
What Oral Health Home runs on the day, and the lessons that build on each part.
Play & Learn
A 30-minute interactive show with puppets and big tooth models that gets the whole class joining in.
In class
Discover
Children find out what their different teeth do, feel food textures, and try biting and chewing for themselves.
Practice
Small groups of four to six children practise brushing and flossing with an oral health therapist beside them.

Receive
Each child has an oral health check, including how their teeth bite together, and then takes home a free toothbrush + toothpaste pack. With consent, they also have a remineralising varnish.

Lesson 1: Meet your teeth
This lesson prepares students before the Whole Bite Club visit. Students will learn that teeth are living parts of the body that do important jobs, that we grow two sets of teeth in our lifetime, and that different teeth have different shapes and roles — ready to explore further with the Oral Health Home team during the visit.Open the lesson - The visit
Lesson 2: The Whole Bite Club visit
The Whole Bite Club visit is the heart of the program — the whole unit is built around it. In this lesson, students take part in the visit: one coordinated session delivered by the Oral Health Home team. The visit has two parts: a 30-minute interactive whole-class lesson, followed by small-group sessions of four to six children (about 15 minutes each) where students practise brushing and flossing and take part in an individual oral health check. Lessons 3 to 5 build directly on what students experience during the visit, so the visit needs to be booked for the unit to run. To arrange your visit, contact Oral Health Home.Open the lesson - After the visit
Lesson 3: What causes tooth decay?
Following the Whole Bite Club visit, students explore what causes tooth decay (dental caries). They will discover that decay is a kind of infection — germs in the mouth use the sugar in our food to make acid that can harm our teeth — and that the foods and drinks we choose affect how well our teeth are protected.Open the lesson - After the visit
Lesson 4: Looking after my face and mouth
After the Whole Bite Club visit, this lesson focuses on personal hygiene, especially caring for our face and mouth. Building on the small-group session — where the Oral Health Home team checked children’s teeth, applied fluoride (with consent), and guided brushing and flossing — students learn that good daily hygiene keeps germs down and helps protect their teeth, and they build these habits into their morning and night routines.Open the lesson - After the visit
Lesson 5: Healthy faces and bodies
To finish the unit after the Whole Bite Club visit, students connect what they have learned about caring for their mouth to caring for their whole face and body. They explore everyday hygiene habits — for the mouth, face, hands and body — and how these keep us and others healthy. Students bring their learning together as “healthy smile heroes” and share a health message.Open the lesson
