Lesson 5

Healthy faces and bodies

After the visitReceive

Overview

To finish the unit after the Whole Bite Club visit, students connect what they have learned about caring for their mouth to caring for their whole face and body. They explore everyday hygiene habits — for the mouth, face, hands and body — and how these keep us and others healthy. Students bring their learning together as “healthy smile heroes” and share a health message.

Learning intention

In this lesson, we will connect looking after our mouth to looking after our whole face and body, and share a healthy message with others.

Success criteria

I will know I am successful when I can:

  • Name ways I look after my whole body with good hygiene, for example brushing my teeth, washing my face and washing my hands.
  • Explain how good hygiene helps keep me and others healthy.
  • Identify a health message or practice in my community.
  • Create and share my own healthy message.

Guiding questions

  • How do we look after our whole face and body each day?
  • How does good hygiene help keep us and others healthy?
  • How can we help others look after their health?

Vocabulary

  • hygiene
  • face
  • body
  • wash
  • clean hands
  • germs
  • spread
  • share
  • healthy
  • message
  • community

Differentiation

Support

  • Provide picture cards of hygiene habits (brushing teeth, washing face, washing hands, and so on) for students to match to the part of the body they look after.
  • Provide sentence starters and picture prompts for the healthy message.

Challenge

  • Students investigate health and hygiene messages and practices in their community (for example, “wash your hands,” “don’t share drink bottles,” brushing charts) and discuss their purposes.
  • Students plan how they might share their message with another class or with their family.

Resources

  • Foundation – Year 2 Supporting Resource Pack
  • Picture cards of hygiene habits for the matching activity
  • Paper and drawing materials for posters
  • Participation certificates

Where this comes from

  1. The Whole Bite Club Teacher Guide

The Foundation to Year 2 lessons themselves. Every lesson in this band is transcribed from the guide without paraphrase, so the guide is the source for the plan as well as for what it teaches.

  2. Kids Health Info: Dental care(opens in a new tab)

That a check-up is a regular habit rather than something you go for when a tooth hurts, and roughly how often children go.

  3. Hand washing(opens in a new tab)

That germs collect on hands and reach the mouth from there, which is why hand washing belongs beside brushing in a daily routine.

Content

Introduction

  • Recall the Whole Bite Club visit and the hygiene habits from earlier lessons — brushing, cleaning between teeth, and washing our face.
  • Ask the guiding question: How do we look after our whole face and body each day? Record responses.

Body

Healthy faces and bodies

  • Explain that looking after our mouth is part of looking after our whole face and body. Discuss the everyday hygiene habits that keep us healthy — brushing our teeth, washing our face, washing our hands, and keeping clean.
  • Match hygiene habits to the parts of the body they look after.

Keeping germs away

  • Recall from Lesson 3 that our mouths have tiny germs, and that some germs can spread from person to person.
  • Discuss simple ways we keep germs from spreading — washing our hands, covering our coughs and sneezes, and not sharing things that go in our mouths (like cups, drink bottles and toothbrushes).

Health messages in our community

  • Discuss where we see health and hygiene messages and practices — at school, at home, or at the shops. Ask what these messages are telling us, and why (linking directly to investigating health messages and their purposes).
  • Talk about how visiting an oral health professional for a regular check-up is one important healthy habit, alongside good hygiene and healthy eating and drinking.

Become a healthy smile hero

  • Each student creates their own healthy message — a poster, drawing or short sentence — encouraging others to look after their face and body with good hygiene. Provide prompts such as “Brush twice a day,” “Wash your hands,” and “Water is best.”

Conclusion

  • Healthy smile heroes
  • Students share their messages with the class (or another class).
  • Celebrate the completion of the unit.
  • Participation certificates
  • Congratulations! You are now a member of The Whole Bite Club.
  • Print certificates for the students. [Certificate design to follow.]
