The Whole Bite Club · Prep to Year 2 · Lesson 5 · After the visit

Healthy faces and bodies

To finish the unit after the Whole Bite Club visit, students connect what they have learned about caring for their mouth to caring for their whole face and body. They explore everyday hygiene habits — for the mouth, face, hands and body — and how these keep us and others healthy. Students bring their learning together as “healthy smile heroes” and share a health message.

In this lesson, we will connect looking after our mouth to looking after our whole face and body, and share a healthy message with others.

I will know I am successful when I can:

  • Name ways I look after my whole body with good hygiene, for example brushing my teeth, washing my face and washing my hands.
  • Explain how good hygiene helps keep me and others healthy.
  • Identify a health message or practice in my community.
  • Create and share my own healthy message.
  • How do we look after our whole face and body each day?
  • How does good hygiene help keep us and others healthy?
  • How can we help others look after their health?

Teacher notes, slide by slide

The number beside each note is the slide it belongs to, counting from the first.

  1. 1.TitleHealthy faces and bodies

In this lesson, we will connect looking after our mouth to looking after our whole face and body, and share a healthy message with others. Recall the Whole Bite Club visit and the hygiene habits from earlier lessons — brushing, cleaning between teeth, and washing our face.

  2. 2.QuestionHow do we look after our whole face and body each day?

Ask the guiding question: How do we look after our whole face and body each day? Record responses.

  3. 3.SlideOur mouth is part of our body

Explain that looking after our mouth is part of looking after our whole face and body. Discuss the everyday hygiene habits that keep us healthy — brushing our teeth, washing our face, washing our hands, and keeping clean.

  4. 4.SlideWhich habit looks after what?

Match hygiene habits to the parts of the body they look after. Support: provide picture cards of hygiene habits (brushing teeth, washing face, washing hands, and so on) for students to match to the part of the body they look after.

  5. 5.GameWhich habit goes where?

Children drag a toothbrush, soap and face washer onto teeth, hands and face. Use it as the class version of the matching activity.

  6. 6.QuestionHow does good hygiene help keep us and others healthy?

Guiding question. Recall from Lesson 3 that our mouths have tiny germs, and that some germs can spread from person to person.

  7. 7.SlideKeeping germs from spreading

Discuss simple ways we keep germs from spreading — washing our hands, covering our coughs and sneezes, and not sharing things that go in our mouths (like cups, drink bottles and toothbrushes).

  8. 8.SlideHealth messages around us

Discuss where we see health and hygiene messages and practices — at school, at home, or at the shops. Ask what these messages are telling us, and why. Talk about how visiting an oral health professional for a regular check-up is one important healthy habit, alongside good hygiene and healthy eating and drinking.

  9. 9.QuestionHow can we help others look after their health?

Guiding question. Challenge: students plan how they might share their message with another class or with their family.

  10. 10.SlideBecome a healthy smile hero

Each student creates their own healthy message — a poster, drawing or short sentence — encouraging others to look after their face and body with good hygiene. Provide prompts such as “Brush twice a day,” “Wash your hands,” and “Water is best.”

  11. 11.WorksheetMy healthy message

Students draw and write their healthy message, then share it with the class (or another class). Support: provide sentence starters and picture prompts for the healthy message.

  12. 12.GameYour certificate

Type each child's first name and print their certificate: “Congratulations! You are now a member of The Whole Bite Club.” The name is kept on this device only.

  13. 13.RecapYou are a Whole Bite Club member!

Students share their messages with the class (or another class). Celebrate the completion of the unit and hand out the participation certificates: Congratulations! You are now a member of The Whole Bite Club.
